Collect Data as a Volunteer

Do you know the difference between a damsel fly and a may fly, or where the tiger salamanders live? Would you like to learn about these and countless other inhabitants of our watershed? If so, consider volunteering as a Hellgrammite stream monitor or as a member of FLOW’s Science Committee.

Hellgrammite volunteers measure the quality of the water and health of the Lower Olentangy Watershed ecosystem by counting the insects and other creatures that inhabit our streams. Changes in stream populations alert us to potential problems. Our science committee then analyzes the data from volunteers and other sources to make recommendations and determine areas in need of restoration. Our Science Committee helped compile the Lower Olentangy Watershed Inventory (see below), which contains detailed assessments of the hydrology, geology, and biology of our river.

If you are interested in water quality monitoring, field survey assessments, data analysis, or just splashing around in the river, contact hdean@olentangywatershed.org. A background in science is not required: everyone can contribute.
